Yahoo Games reviews Modern Warfare 2 which is just released today. No doubt, this game got 5 out of 5 from them.

“When Infinity Ward moved their flagship first person shooter title, Call of Duty, from its traditional World War II setting to more contemporary battlefields, they not only rebooted the series but also the entire genre. Stylish and inventive in equal parts, Modern Warfare captured and exaggerated the fire and bombast of modern warfare in an irresistible way. For this, undoubtedly the most widely anticipated sequel of the year, the developer has primarily built upon the first game’s successes rather than attempting to reinvent them, a wise decision that pays off handsomely.

Play throughout the game switches between different soldiers, placing you in the boots of a variety of British and American soldiers as an excuse to visit a diverse range of locations. From the sandy streets of Afghanistan to the frozen mountains of Kazakhstan, the game’s vistas are nothing short of spectacular, providing compelling backdrops to the game’s primary attraction: gunplay. Once again, the combat in Modern Warfare 2 is tight, precise and consistently engaging. The huge array of weaponry presented to you over the course of the game allows for a range of strategies to be employed throughout, whether you’re more comfortable maintaining distance with targets down the barrel of a sniper rifle or up-close and dangerous with a shotgun.

The set-pieces tumble at you at a furious rate, their spectacle scaling in step with a plot that builds to a dizzying crescendo. At times the story and setting seems conflicted. The already infamous airport lobby scene (which the game warns you about in explicit terms not once but twice) reveals Infinity Ward taking a more serious angle on the brutality of modern combat, one that will no doubt be endlessly discussed in coming weeks. But this contrasts with the James Bond-esque silliness displayed when taking down targets one handed while driving a speeding snowmobile, or facing off against a helicopter from an inflatable dinghy over a waterfall; moments that jar with the game’s stabs at a more serious message.

Despite this, the campaign is a bright burst of excitement and exhilaration that will leave first-person shooter fans of all abilities reeling. It’s backed up by Spec Ops mode, a generous series of short challenges available to play either alone or with companions. These vary in purpose but are all graded. The meta-challenge is to earn three stars in each one, adding another several hours worth of play to the already sizeable campaign.

Of course, Modern Warfare 2’s true longevity rests within its exemplary multiplayer modes. As with its forebear, they offer an entirely separate game to work through, with a role-playing game-esque leveling system that rewards you with experience points for every success. The form and function of the game’s multiplayer mode is strictly based upon the template laid out in the first Modern Warfare, but introduces a range of new ‘perks’ (character upgrades that can be unlocked and applied as you work your way up the ranks) and goals. While the true depth and success of this area of the game will reveal itself in the coming weeks, our experiences thus far have been nothing short of brilliant, and Modern Warfare 2 promises months of play for those who want to see how deep the fox hole goes.

The result is a game that manages to match its hype on almost every single account, a rollercoaster ride of a single player campaign backed up by an ocean of multiplayer possibility. The only question is where on earth Infinity Ward can take the series now: they seem to have reached the summit of all they set out to achieve.
